Branching out: The Lucien E. Blackwell Regional Library
Offering an incredible array of children’s activities, adult programs and other resources the Blackwell Regional Library, part of the Free Library of Philadelphia, has been a fixture at 52nd and Sansom since 1976. Only the second of its kind when opened, regional libraries are typically larger than neighborhood branches, offering more books and expanded activities. Take a look at some of the great activities coming up on their calendar. Designed with a modernist flair by William Mann and renovated in 2004, the interior is marked by a cavernous mezzanine with several round tables and lit during the day by huge clerestory windows.

The vast expanses of wall are pleasantly adorned by large and colorful paintings including a piece by Philadelphia artist George Beach aptly titled Knowledge. Sparing use of color in the form of a cheery blue paint on the main stair welcomes patrons into the central hall.
If you’re a member of the Free Library and you ask for a PIN number, free wireless internet access is also available. According to their calendar, the library will be celebrating World Turtle Day this Wednesday, May 23rd, with some crafts for children. What better excuse do you need to poke your head out of your shell and explore the library in your own backyard?
