Where the real Jamaicans go for the goods

Craig LaBan accompanied his family’s nanny/babysitter to Walnut Supermarket in a piece in yesterday’s Inquirer:

Joan Witter strides along Walnut Street just east of the bustling 52d Street corridor and stops at a facade painted with Caribbean flags. “You can smell the islands in here,” she tells me eagerly. And as she opens the door to the Walnut Supermarket, a breeze tinged with salt fish, ripening plantains and exotic spice greets my nose like a trade wind.

Check out the link for mouthwatering descriptions along with some delicious-looking recipes. In the 5100 block of Walnut, there are two places you can get many of the necessary ingredients:

Walnut Supermarket
5131 Walnut
(215) 472-8410

And

Connie’s Food Store
5153 Walnut
(215) 747-8977

I hope LaBan had an opportunity to make it around the corner to Brown Sugar Bakery and Cafe. That place deserves more recognition, especially since we’re not all lucky enough to have Joan Witter cater our block parties.
