Rolling Deep in Southwest Philly: Eastwick Bike Patrol

In early August, I noted that friends of this blog, the Eastwick Bike Patrol, had been the recipients of a substantial grant to add new bikes and acquire bulletproof vests to expand their patrols. Today, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Philadelphia Housing Authority held a press conference in Southwest Philadelphia to announce the Paschall Homes Initiative, a program funded by the Department of Justice as part of its nationwide Public Housing Safety Initiative and aimed at incorporating a number of community groups into crime-prevention efforts. Among those groups is the Eastwick Bike Patrol. From the press release:

In partnership with the 12th Police District, the Philadelphia Bike Patrol has been riding for the last six years. What began with (2) bike patrolment has expanded to include (35) volunteer bike patrolmen. The patrol encompasses the area from 64th Street and Woodland to 86th street and Lindbergh: an area that includes Paschall Homes. Riders patrol for (4) hours a night and submit written reports to the 12th District Police at the conclusion of their shift; sometimes Captain McDonald of the 12th Police District rides with them.

Malcolmxpark.org was at the press conference, of course, and will be bringing you video highlights soon. In the meantime, this video, shot back in May 2007, was our first encounter with the Eastwick Bike Patrol:
