Herman Carter and Frown Down
If you happened through Malcolm X Park on Sunday afternoon, you might have seen a painter hard at work and a line of brightly colored canvasses arrayed on the benches around the gazebo with vaguely familiar designs about them. He is Herman Carter, the local painter and custom clothing designer behind Frown Down, and the paintings were political riffs on familiar pop-culture and advertising images. He didn’t want pictures taken of the work, but you can see some images at his MySpace page and this slide show:
You’ve probably seen the faux police car above around West Philly. Carter is a graduate of West Philadelphia high school. You can read more about his work and his story in this article .
