Philadelphia Murder Rate Update Through March 2008
My records from 2007 show 102 by April 1st 2007, but it’s likely my error rather than PPD’s. Regardless, the murder rate continues to decline relative to both 2007 (when there were already over 100 murders) and 2006 (when there were 82).
The trend seems to be similar for the first three months across all three years, but for whatever reason, the rate seems to have just been reset significantly lower

Is Michael Nutter making a difference already? I know the rate trended down after April 2007, but the first three months are low when compared to the last 8months of Street’s term. I tend to doubt Nutter could impose his will this quick and there are still far too many senseless murder in this city that the government has not way of controlling. I am, however, optimistic that Nutter will come close to cutting the murder rate in half over his tenure in Philly.

Thanks for reading and commenting Randy. I don’t think Nutter can take full credit for the change. The shift in resources to the 12th district probably had a something to do with it, and I think generally there’s an uptick in confidence and optimism in the city that accounts for much of the rest. If Nutter can cut the murder rate in half–and I agree that that is entirely possible–he may replace William Penn on City Hall.

most of the people be murdered are criminals, though, and culling the criminal ranks isn’t the worst thing in the world.

Nutter is a cool guy, he has a huge nose and doesn’t afraid of anything

Mr. Nutter is doing an excellent job but how about programs to help avoid over-crowded prisons or simply programs that will encourage a brighter future. I was in the system for almost 20 yrs. and I live in Philadelphia since I was born in 1981. I now don’t live in Philadelphia, because the Government and the Mayors simply don’t care as long as they get a pat on their for slowing down crime but leaving the door open to their prison for money that is not used to help Exconvicts or simply the trouble people of Philadelphia. The only answer is… More police officer to patrol the street to be killed unjustiedly. Get it completely together and get involved with children as well as the parent lives that is struggle for the basic need to live !! I love the city but it will never be safe until people stop the greed and being about self !

It’s not that philly is a bad place. Only people who aren’t from there say that it’s that we got some people who try to earn there respect and their going about it in the wrong way. Fill me
