Today, from Noon to 9pm, is the 6th Annual Ma’at Celebration for African Independence Day in Malcolm X Park. As in years past, there will be children’s activities, live performances and vendors of various kinds:
Despite the threat of rain, we had a nice crowd last night for Reference Point. The dedicated crowd just gathered in a little tighter under the gazebo as the weather worsened, and a great time was had by all! See you again next week (Thursday from 7-9pm) for the Barbara Walker Story.
Due to some rain-outs early in the summer, the Summer Heritage Jazz Series is on an every-week schedule for the remainder of July. Tomorrow night, we welcome well-known West Philadelphian and perennial favorite Glen Bryan! Here’s a clip from their performance during the 2008 season:
As always, the Thursday night concerts are FREE and run from 7-9pm under the gazebo in the center of Malcolm X Park. Malcolm X Park is bordered by 51st and 52nd, Pine and Larchwood in West Philadelphia. Come on out and join us!
…who you’ll run into at a Friends of Malcolm X Park jazz concert!
(left to right) Jan Jeffries, Marcy Francis and a friend came out for Bill Booker’s concert on June 25th. Francis has a new album out, with executive producer Leonard Nelson Hubbard (aka Hub) former bassist for The Roots. You can hear the songs and buy it here at CD Baby. You can find out more about Marcy and Jan, and their project Music Over Matter (MOM) here. Thanks for coming out, ladies, and we’ll see you at the next one!

There’ll be a drill team performance by Command Performance, a step show by Zeta Phi Beta, a Flea Market, and a variety of food vendors. It’s setting up now and should be a fun time!
From 10am to 3pm today, the Provider to Provider Initiative is staging what can only be described as an extravaganza. This may be the first time in the history of the park that it has hosted actual carnival rides! In addition, there’ll be pony rides, music, dancing and food. And it’s all free!
On Saturday, June 6th, Provider to Provider will offer support resources for home-based childcare providers in Malcolm X Park. If you, or someone you know, could use a little help dealing with the stresses of running a small home-based childcare operation, this seems like a really useful events. Here’s how Provider to Provider describes its mission:

PTP is dedicated to the health and welfare of daycare providers by providing health, wellness and stress management workshops. PTP believes in taking care of the providers physically and mentally.
I’ve made a long-overdue update to our schedule of events here in Malcolm X Park, including all of the Summer Heritage Jazz Series events. I’ll be updating with additional public events not sponsored by the Friends of Malcolm X Park as I hear about them:
Note that this calendar is always available on the Schedule of Events page in the right hand column of the website!
This morning, Malcolm X Park will see the addition of a handful of new trees to replace a few of those lost in recent years. If you’re feeling spry, come out and join the effort! 9am to about 1pm.
