A quiet jazz set from Jeannie Brooks

Friends and neighbors came out last night to enjoy Jeannie Brooks and band in the cooling weather ahead of Hurricane Earl:

The final show of the 2010 Summer Heritage Jazz Series will take place Thursday September 16th from 7-9pm and feature bassist Nate Murray and his band playing upbeat blues and jazz standards.  Murray’s always a great show.

Hope to see you there!

Last night, Nate Murray (above) and his band played the last concert of the 10th annual Summer Heritage Jazz Series.  Thanks to all the great artists who made it out this season!  And a special thanks to Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell for helping make the series possible (and attending every single show!).  We’ll have video from last night soon.

City Year in Malcolm X Park

A large group of folks from City Year have been using Malcolm X Park this week for calisthenics and their daily briefings.  They’ve been moving around the city to various parks and other locations as a way to introduce new participants to Philadelphia, including how to make use of the city’s transit system to get around.

After some brisk calisthenics (top), they gathered for a ‘Daily Briefing.’   Learn more about City Year, and how to participate yourself, at their website.

Rain Shelter

When the rain started this evening, it was game-over for these card players who huddled under the covered table to stay dry.  The line-dancing was cancelled this evening, but it’ll be back again next week!

Photos from last night’s show

Despite the threat of rain, we had a nice crowd last night for Reference Point.  The dedicated crowd just gathered in a little tighter under the gazebo as the weather worsened, and a great time was had by all!  See you again next week (Thursday from 7-9pm) for the Barbara Walker Story.
