Friends and neighbors came out last night to enjoy Jeannie Brooks and band in the cooling weather ahead of Hurricane Earl:
The final show of the 2010 Summer Heritage Jazz Series will take place Thursday September 16th from 7-9pm and feature bassist Nate Murray and his band playing upbeat blues and jazz standards. Murray’s always a great show.
DJ Ali Hackett, King of the Oldies, continued his wildly successful Friday night institutiont with yet another great turnout. Hackett will be away next week, but he returns the following week, September 10th and every Friday through October!
Now in their third year, Hackett’s Oldies Nights get larger and more diverse with each passing week, drawing dancers and music lovers from across the Delaware Valley. If you love music and dancing or just like watching, an evening in Malcolm X Park with Ali Hackett is not to be missed!
Fridays (Except next week, September 3rd)
5pm to 9pm
Malcolm X Park
West Philadelphia (51st and Pine)
FREE!
Wilbert Hart, one of the original members of the Delfonics, poses with Gregorio Pac Cojulun in Malcolm X Park during Ali Hackett’s Wednesday Night Workout. The last Wednesday night of the season is this week! Please join us.
Last night, Nate Murray (above) and his band played the last concert of the 10th annual Summer Heritage Jazz Series. Thanks to all the great artists who made it out this season! And a special thanks to Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell for helping make the series possible (and attending every single show!). We’ll have video from last night soon.

A large group of folks from City Year have been using Malcolm X Park this week for calisthenics and their daily briefings. They’ve been moving around the city to various parks and other locations as a way to introduce new participants to Philadelphia, including how to make use of the city’s transit system to get around.
After some brisk calisthenics (top), they gathered for a ‘Daily Briefing.’ Learn more about City Year, and how to participate yourself, at their website.
New neighbors on 51st Street introduced their very talented Cockatoo to the pleasure of an afternoon in Malcolm X Park. The park is no stranger to exotic creatures!
Despite the threat of rain, an enthusiastic crowd turned out last night for the Wednesday Night Workout with DJ Ali Hackett! The music and dancing returns every Wednesday all summer long from 6-9pm in Malcolm X Park.
Tonight, we’re pleased to welcome Shirley Lites to the Summer Heritage Jazz Series! 7-9pm right here under the gazebo. The show, as always, is free.
When the rain started this evening, it was game-over for these card players who huddled under the covered table to stay dry. The line-dancing was cancelled this evening, but it’ll be back again next week!
Despite the threat of rain, we had a nice crowd last night for Reference Point. The dedicated crowd just gathered in a little tighter under the gazebo as the weather worsened, and a great time was had by all! See you again next week (Thursday from 7-9pm) for the Barbara Walker Story.
