Volunteers from the Friends of Malcolm X Park, UC Green, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the surrounding neighborhood and from across the city gathered in Malcolm X Park to help plant two young Sugar Maples. The trees were a surprise donation to the park, left over from the streetscaping around the newly refurbished Market St. section of the El.
This morning, Malcolm X Park will see the addition of a handful of new trees to replace a few of those lost in recent years. If you’re feeling spry, come out and join the effort! 9am to about 1pm.
Last year, the Friends of Malcolm X Park did our best to cope with the stunning volume of leaves produced by the more than 100 giant trees in the park. In one clean-up day, we raked up 141 bags worth of leaves.
This year, we got a huge gift of one of the most thorough and coordinated leaf-recovery missions I’ve ever seen. There are now virtually no leaves to be found in the park!
Back in August, signs sprung up on a couple of store fronts on 52nd Street, and at least one of them is now open for business! Meet Salaam’s Florals at 212 S. 52nd St:
As of now, they have a small selection of cut flowers and a variety of vases for sale. It looks like the store is still getting fully equipped, so the variety and volume of the stock may change in the near future. Check it out on your way to pick up a giant catfish fillet at Mr. Hook.
