Friends and neighbors came out last night to enjoy Jeannie Brooks and band in the cooling weather ahead of Hurricane Earl:
The final show of the 2010 Summer Heritage Jazz Series will take place Thursday September 16th from 7-9pm and feature bassist Nate Murray and his band playing upbeat blues and jazz standards. Murray’s always a great show.

DJ Ali Hackett, King of the Oldies, continued his wildly successful Friday night institutiont with yet another great turnout. Hackett will be away next week, but he returns the following week, September 10th and every Friday through October!
Now in their third year, Hackett’s Oldies Nights get larger and more diverse with each passing week, drawing dancers and music lovers from across the Delaware Valley. If you love music and dancing or just like watching, an evening in Malcolm X Park with Ali Hackett is not to be missed!

The weather has continually conspired against the great folks over at Spiral Q puppet theater, but the 10th Annual Peoplehood Pageant and Parade will finally go ahead tomorrow (Saturday) indoors!

Last night, Nate Murray (above) and his band played the last concert of the 10th annual Summer Heritage Jazz Series. Thanks to all the great artists who made it out this season! And a special thanks to Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell for helping make the series possible (and attending every single show!). We’ll have video from last night soon.
At his “Night of the Stars” in Malcolm X Park, DJ Ali Hackett told a story about a Bunny Sigler performance he saw at a club in Philadelphia. Sigler was invited to sing, but he was hesitant. Under pressure, he got up and sang a song that consisted entirely of counting to ten. In a reprise of that performance here, Ali Hackett starts him off, and Sigler carries it through. It was a nice little moment:
I could not be more excited for a new season of puppet building with Spiral Q here in Malcolm X Park! If you’ve lived in West Philadelphia for any length of time, you’ve almost certainly seen Spiral Q’s wonderful Peoplehood Parade. Now is your chance to get in on the action!
Every Friday and Saturday during the remainder of September, Spiral Q will hold FREE puppet-building workshops under the gazebo in Malcolm X Park. Those dates and times are as follows:
Friday, Sept. 18 from 3-7 PM
Saturday, Sept. 19, from 12-4 PM
Friday, Sept. 25th from 3-7 PM
Saturday, Sept. 26th from 12-4 PM
Again, all the activities are free, and anyone can participate!
The final parade (starting outside Paul Robeson House at 50th and Walnut) happens on Saturday October 17th at 1pm. Here’s what it looked like last year:
